American jobs or Foreign Lives?

Posted by Condomologist on March 25, 2009

The US Agency for International Development (USAID) will begin purchasing condoms overseas , which will result in the loss of about 300 American jobs in Alabama. It’s never pleasant to see Americans unemployed — especially in this economy — but when condoms cost less than half as much elsewhere, it’s hard to argue with the decision. Of course, in an ideal world, we would realize that spending more for a homegrown product makes sense — whether because of quality or simply the improved work environment  and salary here at home vs. abroad — but then, how is it that a woman working at this company making condoms for 20 years is making only $9.50/hour? Seems like USAID  was choosing the lesser of two evils. I can live with that. I think.
