The Pope and Condoms

Posted by Condomologist on March 19, 2009

Everybody in the sexual health world is talking about what the Pope said just prior to arriving on his current trip to Africa. My guess is the quote is a translation, but I’ve read many sources and they’re all pretty similar: “[HIV/AIDS is] a tragedy that cannot be overcome by money alone, that cannot be overcome through the distribution of condoms, which even aggravates the problems.” And it’s not the first time he’s made remarks like these. In fairness, this tragedy cannot be overcome solely by money or condoms, but to say they aggravate the problem…well, you be the judge. I’ll just say it’s downright dangerous. The best his supporters can muster is responses like this from Fox News contributor, Father Jonathan (great name!), whose ignorance to the danger of the Pope’s statement is equally scary. I don’t have (or want to spend the) time to get into this nonsense too much, but I’ll say that the Pope would have a lot more credibility if he elaborated on the why HIV/AIDS cannot be overcome solely by money or condoms and left out the second part about it aggravating the problem. When you have that many followers who take your every word as bond, such religious dogma is as irresponsible as it gets.

On a related note, while I’ve been pointing out some of the conflicts that arise when religion meets sex, I think it important to point out that many Catholics don’t subscribe to such baloney that condoms are anti-life or just plain wrong. And I find it reprehensible when liberal, so-called progressive activist groups — like one unnamed one in Philadelphia I won’t pick a fight with here — have leaders who think it wise and useful to promote pictures like this in denouncing the Pope’s comments, essentially calling religious leaders “scumbags.” It’s hard to read the small print in the photo, but basically it’s a Catholic man of the cloth next to a condom, headlined by KNOW YOUR SCUMBAGS and under the condom it says, This one prevents AIDS.

It’s not that hard to make the Pope — and thus the Vatican and the Catholic church as a whole — look a bit out of touch; they do that themselves. But to start name-calling in a case like this is utterly unproductive. When will the left learn that their radicalism is often as off-putting as that of the right?
