Living large with the Herp

Posted by Condomologist on February 24, 2009

Word on the street is that a guy named Doug Sturlingh down in Florida has filed a patent application for a Genital Shield to act as barrier method worn by a man to fully cover the penis and testicles so as to prevent the transmission of infections through skin-to-skin contact. I’ve heard this idea thrown around for years now — why can’t they just make something to cover your balls, too? — and figured it was only a matter of time. If it works, more power to all of us, but like the spray-on condom —  a great German idea that holds great promise, but currently lacks the drying time necessary to maintain an erection — I’ll believe it when I see it. The only thing I would note is that it seems to me that while such a condom would certainly provide added protection, it would not be 100% effective in preventing Herpes or HPV or syphilis, because infection can still present itself on the inner thighs, the perineum and other moist crevasses in the genital area. Just something to keep in mind.

It’s unclear what the final name will be, because Sturlingh has a site calling his invention the Herpes Shield, but it’s possible he’s changed the name because such a device would also protect against HPV and syphilis and other skin-to-skin infections.  On the site, we’re told,  “The Herpes Shield protects the entire genital area of a man, combining a shield over the genitalia and a modified condom to cover the penis. The added bonus is that the connection of shield to the condom creates a constriction to heighten sexual arousal, pleasure and stamina.” The pleasure-with-an-STD remark makes me think of the commercials for Valtrex, the meds used to reduce the severity and outbreaks of Herpes, in which we’re reminded that even with Herpes, we can still go skydiving and mountain biking and be happy and beautiful people. So not only will this act as a barrier, but we’re told it will have some sort of cock ring-type constricting effect that will increase pleasure. Bring it on, Sturlingh.
